Mayor Mike Duggan of Detroit said Wednesday he will not be seeking a fourth term. This was made clear to an audience full of city hall workers.
Saddened but not surprised Duggan 66 was monumental to the rebuilding of Detroit. The mayor did with bipartisanship and support from both sides of the aisle.
Mr. Duggan did not speak on future political plans, however, the rumor mill has been working and the word on the street is Mike may want to throw his hat in for Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s office when she terms out in 2026.
Mayor Duggan told listeners that he accomplished his goal of growing the city of Detroit’s population, which the 2020 census showed was still down 10 percent. A point of contention a number fought over by the city.
Duggan who previously headed the Detroit Medical Center as the CEO became mayor of Detroit in 2014. Fixing the financial mess, bringing business, and even working with some sketchy developers, dealing with harsh criticism. Duggan easily won reelection for the next two terms.
What does the future hold for the mayor who has seen growth under his watch? The city of Detroit has not seen such growth since the late 1950’s.
Duggan will be sorely missed by the city and its people, hopefully, he chooses to run for governor and brings that same bipartisanship, sleeves rolled up, and feet on the street attitude to help Michigan achieve the growth he helped build in Detroit.
