Hazel Perk and Bobby McDade

Frank A. Fiorello; peace, love, and a loaded gun.

I had no concept of the adventure awaiting me with my partner in crime on that delightful Friday evening in late October. The weather was exceptional, and all I was aware of was that I would be attending a musical performance with my friend Anison 'The Impaler' Roberts to offer my assistance and support.

In the run-up to the performance, I was completely in the dark regarding the venue and our musical collaborators. Time seemed to pass in a haze, with the event's flyer only catching my attention a day or two prior, featuring Bobby McDade. His name was known to me through my involvement in the local music scene, yet we had never met or crossed paths professionally. On the day of the show, I went straight home after work, had a meal, and then set off to meet The Impaler before heading to the venue.

When I arrived to pick up Anison for our outing, we promptly launched into a conversation that covered a range of topics, including in-depth philosophical explorations, spirited political exchanges, and ample laughs. In the course of our discussion, I learned that the event I had previously believed was happening in Hamtramck was actually set to occur in Hazel Park. I was surprisingly misinformed and simply going along, despite being responsible for guiding us to our destination.

Upon arriving at the strip plaza, we noticed the unpretentious buildings lacked exterior charm. However, as we parked and retrieved the equipment bags, our attention shifted to the Hazel Perk Cafe, located at the end of the complex. Upon entering, our initial impressions were swiftly altered.

Tucked away in an unpretentious building, The Hazel Perk revealed itself to be a treasure trove of visual delights. Stepping inside, I was enveloped by a kaleidoscope of colors and an astounding array of decorative elements. Vibrant hues of green, purple, orange, and yellow on the walls provided a backdrop for an impressive collection of artwork, timepieces, and rare finds. The addition of books, comics, and meticulously curated decor created an immersive experience. My initial reaction was one of wonder, spending the first thirty minutes absorbing every detail of this extraordinary setting.

While absorbing the ambiance of this exceptional establishment, I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Tim, and his associate, Russ. The Hazel Perk's visual appeal was matched by our host's warm hospitality and eagerness to assist, making it an instant favorite. As Anison and I perused the menu together, we mutually agreed to make this venue a regular destination.

This cozy cafe boasted an unexpectedly expansive menu, efficiently consolidated onto a single page, which greatly impressed me. The diverse beverage selection included hot and cold drinks, gourmet coffees, hot and iced, bobo tea, and more. Additional offerings comprised donuts, ice cream, meals, dinner specials, and assorted snacks. Anison and I chose coffee drinks; my preference was the iced caramel macchiato, while Anison opted for the hot mocha latte. The drinks were exceptional, showcasing refined flavors and superior coffee quality. Although we didn't dine this evening, a return visit is forthcoming.

I am compelled to elaborate on the exceptional quality of Hazel Perk and its staff, but there is a secondary aspect to this narrative, specifically the entertainment component. Notably, my associate was performing, accompanied by additional acts. The evening's program commenced with Errol Frick, who delivered an outstanding opening set, showcasing several original compositions and select covers, including a distinctive rendition of Taylor Swift's 'Shake It Off.' Errol's passionate lyrics and engaging performance made him an ideal choice to initiate the show.

The lineup continued with Bobby McDade and his band. Bobby performed vocals and guitar, joined by a bassist and musicians on bongo and amplified drums, as well as mandolin. Earlier, my request for Rod Stewart's 'Maggie May' went unfulfilled, earning only a couple of laughs. Mandolin is a rare feature in rock music, with 'Mandolin Wind' being another notable example from Stewart. Bobby had a brief emotional moment during sound check but quickly composed himself, and the group was prepared to start.

Between the Hazel Perk's charming ambiance and Bobby McDade's masterful musicianship, I was utterly captivated. His ensemble's exceptional skill and synergy made them a standout jam band, evoking a classic hippie vibe that resonated deeply with this live music enthusiast. From the opening notes to the final song – a superb cover of ‘Helter Skelter’ by the legendary Liverpool group – Bobby McDade and his band delivered a truly unforgettable experience. Their spontaneous jam session was the set's highlight, demonstrating their remarkable musical rapport. I eagerly await their future performances.

For the grand finale, we were treated to a solo session with Detroit's own Anison 'The Impaler' Roberts of the esteemed N2 Submission band. Accompanied by Bobby McDade on guitar, The Impaler navigated a predominantly new set list with ease, despite limited familiarity. Notably, Bobby, who had not rehearsed the set, also performed seamlessly. The duo's synergy ignited the stage, concluding with a memorable performance of Johnny Cash's iconic 'Man In Black.' Both Anison and Bobby clearly relished their shared experience, delivering a superb show from beginning to end.

My sole mistake was leaving my Red Wings jacket behind upon departure. Anison thoughtfully reminded me the next day, and I was confident in its safe return. The genuine warmth of Tim, Russ, and the Hazel Perk team crafted a uniquely welcoming space. If you're unfamiliar with this gem, I recommend exploring it and supporting its exceptional proprietors. Please join me for a coffee at the Hazel Perk Cafe located at: 21403 John R. Road in Hazel Park.
